So what's the difference between a graphic novel and a comic book?

Well, really nothing. Both use pictures and words to move a story. Both have an undetermined number of pages and can be printed in a variety of formats. A graphic novel is what librarians and educators prefer to call comic books used to promote literacy in schools. Unfortunately comics have been looked down on for years as the reason why kids don't read books. Today's kids are so engrossed in television and video games many adults are welcoming anything that gets a child to willingly read.
